Background of the Study
Drought is a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall that significantly affects agricultural production, water supply, and public health. In northeastern Nigeria, Borno State is particularly susceptible to drought due to its geographical location and limited water resources. The state has faced recurring droughts that have led to severe consequences for both the environment and human health. Droughts have disrupted food production, reduced access to clean water, and exacerbated malnutrition, which are direct contributors to health problems (Mustapha et al., 2024).
The impact of drought on health is multifaceted, with increased prevalence of malnutrition, dehydration, and respiratory diseases being particularly common in drought-affected areas. In addition, the stress caused by drought can lead to mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. Given the growing frequency of droughts in the region, it is crucial to assess the health risks associated with drought and develop strategies to mitigate its impact. This study seeks to investigate the health risks associated with drought in Borno State and explore ways to address these challenges.
Statement of the Problem
Borno State is increasingly affected by droughts, which result in significant health risks, including malnutrition, dehydration, and respiratory diseases. However, the specific health risks related to droughts in the state have not been fully explored. Understanding these risks is critical for developing public health strategies to reduce the negative health impacts of drought and improve resilience to climate-related health challenges.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the health risks associated with drought in Borno State.
2. To examine the impact of drought on the prevalence of malnutrition and waterborne diseases in the state.
3. To provide recommendations for mitigating the health risks associated with drought in Borno State.
Research Questions
1. What are the primary health risks associated with drought in Borno State?
2. How does drought contribute to the prevalence of malnutrition and waterborne diseases in Borno State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the health risks associated with drought in Borno State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Drought in Borno State is significantly associated with an increase in malnutrition and dehydration-related health issues.
2. The frequency of droughts in Borno State is positively correlated with an increase in respiratory and waterborne diseases.
3. Interventions aimed at improving water access and food security will reduce the health risks associated with drought in Borno State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the health risks associated with drought in Borno State, with particular attention to malnutrition, dehydration, and respiratory diseases. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining comprehensive health data in remote or conflict-affected areas of the state, as well as the difficulty in distinguishing the specific effects of drought from other contributing factors, such as conflict and displacement.
Definition of Terms
• Drought: A prolonged period of inadequate rainfall that leads to water shortages and disrupts food production.
• Malnutrition: A condition resulting from insufficient intake or absorption of nutrients, often exacerbated by drought-induced food shortages.
• Waterborne Diseases: Diseases caused by consuming contaminated water, including cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever.
